In the past, the FDA has discovered nitrosamines in medications used to treat diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Heartburn, and Acid Reflux. Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), Ranitidine, Nizatidine, and Metformin are a few of the medications from specific manufacturers that have been recalled due to Nitrosamine impurities.
Medicines may develop Nitrosamines as a result of chemical reactions occurring throughout the drug production process.
However, because many cancers can develop slowly over decades, it is difficult to estimate the precise risk. Previous study has connected exposure to high amounts of Nitrosamines to several distinct types of cancer, including Pancreatic and Gastrointestinal Tumours. Despite being classified by the World Health Organization as potential human carcinogens, nitrosamine impurities found in prescription drugs may not pose a significant Cancer risk.
